Yaa Élombé Dessalines is Haitian born, storyteller, activist, healer, Pan-African, Vouduizant, and the mother to her soon to be 17 year old son. She has lived in Brooklyn, NY for the past forty years. As a storyteller, Yaa has been nurtured by two finest storytellers, Elder Thelma Ruffin Thomas and Dr. Joyce C. Duncan, founders of African Folk Heritage Circle Inc. Yaa has matured in the art of storytelling that reflects African thoughts.
Yaa activism is demonstrated by making visible a small community of Haitian people who are marginalized and disenfranchised - giving the people - Anba Mourne a voice to speak for themselves. Her plight is to empower this small community and to elevate them to self-sustenance.
She is a practitioner of the Orisa Life Style- Yoruba African Traditional Spirituality and she is a vodouisant and she identifies as a mambo makoute. Her extensive travels include South Africa, England, Italy, France, Dubai, Mexico, Indonesia, Ghana, Benin and the West Indies, which have exposed her to different aspects of theatre, social work, and healing practices.
She aspires to pursue her calling to social justice and humanitarian services by working on a healing practice designed to implement culturally relevant healing modalities. She believes that there is multiple path of spiritual influence.
Yaa received her Doctorate in Ministry Education and Pastoral counseling from Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.
